The Real Risk of Moving to “the Cloud”

“The Cloud...”

What is the Cloud? How do you know if it’s a safe enough place to store your data? What are the risks and benefits of choosing a cloud-based provider?

How do you find out what type of security questions you should ask potential providers?

Anyone who manages sensitive data and has shopped around for software has asked those critical questions.

Which is why we’ve teamed up with the seasoned experts at Lockton Companies to find some answers in our free, one hour webcast, Defining Due Diligence How to Move to the Cloud Safely. Download the webinar below or see the recap here

Cloud Concerns

So, how do you know if you should choose a cloud-based solution? How do you decide if the risks outweigh the cost?

There are legitimate concerns (like low barrier to entry), and misinformed concerns like “anyone can access your data.”

Unfounded bias in either direction will leave us with fewer vendor options than what we should be considering.

Which is why it’s so important to understand the basic differences between cloud-based or “off premises” solutions and the traditional “on premises” servers you keep in your physical office.

Another valid consideration is that users have less control with cloud-based solutions.

While off-prem platforms (also called SaaS, or Software as Service) are configurable, they are not customizable. See Lockon’s great explanation of the difference here.

Meaning if you have highly specific or unique requirements “the cloud” may not be the best fit.

On the other hand, traditional on-prem solutions may not be as secure as they first seem. This great article quoted Vivek Kundra, former federal CIO of the United States, as saying:

“‘Cloud computing is often far more secure than traditional computing, because [cloud providers] can attract and retain cyber-security personnel of a higher quality than many governmental agencies.’”

In short, while you don’t need to be afraid of putting your data on the cloud, but you do need to understand the critical factors involved.

Which is why we’re giving away a hands-on webinar to help explain the differences, and give practical suggestions for vetting options.
